DIY: Fabric Napkin Ring

Truthfully, I’m not sure if I can recall a time I really used napkin rings; they add a sense of formality that I don’t find particularly necessary. However, they can add some color and personality to the table, and this is a simple way to make your own napkin rings.

I had a paper towel roll and thought that it could easily be converted into a napkin ring.

SUPPLIES
  • Paper towel roll(s)
  • Scissors
  • Tacky glue
  • Fabric (I used a cotton fabric. Avoid using fabric that’s too thin or the glue will soak through.)
  • Pinking shears (optional)

DIRECTIONS
— 1 —
Remove excess paper from paper towel roll.

— 2 —
Cut roll to create rings. (I cut mine about an inch thick.)

— 3 —
Cut fabric to size. [I cut mine slightly larger than the length and width (including the interior) of the ring. Mine was approximately 3 x 6.25 inch.]

— 4 —
Cut one edge of the length and width with pinking shears. (This is optional, but I think it makes the edges look a bit better.)

— 5 —
Put glue on exterior part of ring.

— 6 —
Center fabric and put it on the ring. Make sure that pinking shear edge is over the regular cut edge. Smooth out. Add additional glue to pinking shear edge to glue down if necessary.

— 7 —
Put glue on interior of ring.

— 8 —
Fold fabric sides in, making sure that pinking shear edge is over regular cut edge. Smooth out. Touch up any areas that the fabric isn’t sticking to the ring. Napkin ring finished.

Note: The fabric on the inside of ring will be lumpy if you don’t remove extra fabric by snipping out triangle sections from the edge. (I didn’t care to take this extra step since I didn’t care what the interior looked like.)

Extra Note: If you have particular napkins you want to use with the napkin rings, you may want to make sure that the napkins can fit through the ring before making the rings. The rings themselves aren’t that large, so they may not work with thicker napkins.
