Darn it

I have never darned a sock. I think of socks as fairly disposable pieces of clothing; if it has a hole in it, then you throw it away. I suppose if it was an expensive or novelty sock then there would be an incentive to save it [pause] maybe.

I told my grandma that I recently got a sewing machine (and at that point in time, I had still not used it to make anything). She was nice enough to give me a good pair of sewing scissors and a darning egg (which was unexpected). While I knew such things existed, I don’t think I’d ever seen a real darning egg before.

I’m not sure that I’ll ever darn a sock, but I like my egg because it just looks cool. I’m kind of a sucker for products made of wood, where the natural wood grain shows through. The writing on it remains a mystery to me, which is fine since it likely says something dull (like a company name). The extra surprise of the darning egg is that it can be opened up; my grandma kept a measuring tape inside. (So cute and useful!)
