DIY: Used Gift Card Jewelry

I wanted to use used gift cards in creating jewelry since they’re pretty sturdy and waterproof. And while some gift cards are pretty as-is, most gift card design isn’t something I’d like to wear. Thus, I decided to paint the gift cards with nail polish because of the color selection available and the fact that the paint is waterproof.

SUPPLIES
  • Used gift card(s)
  • Permanent pen
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch (3/16 inch size) and hammer (and self-healing mat)
  • Jump rings
  • Earring hooks or chain
  • Pliers
  • Nail polish

DIRECTIONS

— 1 —
With a permanent pen (and ruler if desired), mark where you want to cut your gift card.

— 2 —
Cut along those marks with scissors.

— 3 —
With a permanent pen, mark where you want your hole to be.

— 4 —
With the hole punch and hammer, punch a hole at that mark. (I like to punch my holes on a hard concrete surface. To help protect my hole punch from hitting the concrete floor, I punch on an old self-healing mat.)

— 5 —
Protect your work surface with a scrap piece of paper. Paint the front of the shape with nail polish. Let dry. Apply a second coat of paint if necessary. Repeat with the back side of the shape if desired.

— 6 —
Use jump rings to connect the painted gift card shape to earring hooks or a chain. Used Gift Card Jewelry complete.

    1. You certainly don't have to paint them, it's just an option. Sometimes gift cards have terrible designs or use colors you just don't like, so painting them whatever color you like gives you extra control. (Because some of us like to have more control than others.)

But if you start with a used gift card that has a design that you like, then it's much faster and easier to create jewelry and not paint them.
