DIY: Paper Towel Round Stand

I thought I could use a paper towel roll to create a simple (and disposable) stand. With just a few cuts, it takes minimal time to make and perfect for holding a photo, postcard or a place card holder for a dinner party.

SUPPLIES
  • Paper towel roll
  • Scissors
  • Acrylic paint
  • Sponge (I used a cosmetic sponge)
  • Tray for paint (or washed plastic lid, TV dinner tray, etc.)
  • Newspaper/cut open paper grocery bag (to protect your surface from paint)

DIRECTIONS

— 1 —
With scissors cut paper towel roll to the desired height you want your stand (mine is at about 1.25 inch). If the edges are a bit rough, smooth them out as best you can with your scissors.

— 2 —
On the topside of the paper roll round, cut two slits across from each other (my cuts are about ½ inch deep).

— 3 —
With the sponge, apply paint to the outside of the paper towel round. Let dry. Paper Towel Round Stand complete. Use the slits in the stand to hold up your item.

Note: I used gold paint because it gave a nice shimmer and I didn’t mind if the paint was uneven or that the brown of the chipboard showed through. If you decide to use a flat color (e.g. red, blue, etc.) it may take several coats for the paint to look even.

Other options:
  • Pretty Paper: glue selected paper to the outside of the paper towel round. If you do this, glue the paper first and then make your slits after the glue has dried.
  • Draw: use permanent markers to draw a design on the paper towel round itself.
  • Glitter: adhere glue to the outside of the paper towel round and then liberally apply glitter.
