DIY: Paper Ball Christmas Ornament

The Christmas trees I had growing up never looked like the Christmas trees you see on TV that are perfectly decorated with their color coordination and shiny metallic ball ornaments. No, our Christmas trees were decorated with a mish-mash of ornaments that were both store bought and handmade—it made for a unique tree.

To create a simple Christmas ornament, I decided to use folded paper circles (not unlike what I did for my Lantern Tag). I think it’s a nice ornament to make if you don’t have quite enough ornaments for your tree (and don’t want to buy more) or if you want a disposable ornament.

SUPPLIES

• Cardstock/Thicker scrapbooking paper
• Circle punch (mine has a 2 inch diameter; it’s not terribly large so you may prefer a larger sized circle punch)
• Hole punch
• Ribbon
• Glue
• Scissors

DIRECTIONS

Punch out 17 circles.

Fold 16 circles in half. (Note: If the paper’s design is one-sided, make sure the design is to the inside of the fold.)

Apply glue to the outside of a folded piece and adhere to a second folded piece. Glue 8 folded circles together. Repeat with other 8 folded circles.

(Note: you may want to glue pieces together in pairs and let them dry so they’re easier to work with. Then glue two pairs together to create a 4-folded circle piece; then glue two 4-folded circle pieces to create a large piece made up of 8-folded circles.)

Apply glue to flat circle. Take one of the 8-folded circle pieces and place on glue. Let dry. Repeat to the other side of the flat circle (making sure that the folds are all facing the same direction).

Punch a hole at the top of the ball (where the two 8-folded circle pieces meet).

Cut a length of ribbon (mine is about 12 inches long). Thread ribbon through the hole and knot at the top. Paper Ball Christmas Ornament complete.
