DIY: Button Ribbon Pin

I had some inexpensive ribbon and some cute buttons and thought I could use them together to create a pin. This pin could be used as a bow for packaging (instead of those plastic-like ones). They’re not too difficult to make and reusable.

SUPPLIES (for both ribbon pin versions)
  • Ribbon (mine is 5/8 inch wide)
  • Button
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Strong adhesive
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • 1 inch bar pin

DIRECTIONS: Button Long Ribbon Pin

— 1 —
Cut two lengths of ribbon: one 5 inches long and one 7 inches long.

— 2 —
Thread your needle.

 — 3 —
Take the 7 inch long ribbon and overlap the ends (at about half an inch). This creates a “circle” shape. Put your needle through the overlapping ribbon ends.

 — 4 —
Put your needle through the overlapping ribbon ends again (thus securing the “circle” in place).

 — 5 —
Flatten the “circle” shape and put your needle through both layers of the ribbon.

 — 6 —
Put your needle through both layers of ribbon again to secure. You should now have an “8” shape.

— 7 —
Take your 5 inch ribbon and repeat the process used on the 7 inch ribbon. You should now have a larger and smaller “8” shape sewed together.

— 8 —
Take your needle and thread your button. Sew your button securely to the center of the ribbons. Cut thread and knot ends. Cut any excess thread.

— 9 —
Apply strong adhesive to the bar pin. Attach pin to the back of the ribbon. Button Long Ribbon Pin complete.

DIRECTIONS: Button Flower Ribbon Pin

— 1 —
Cut four 4 inch long strands of ribbon.

— 2 —
Thread your needle.

— 3 —
Follow the same process of creating circle shapes with your ribbon and then sewing them so they become flat. (Follow direction steps 3-6 of Button Long Ribbon Pin). Create one ribbon “8” shape.

 — 4 —
With the second ribbon “circle”, sew it perpendicularly. (This creates a “+” shape.)

— 5 —
The third ribbon “circle”, sew it diagonally to the “+” shape.

 — 6 —
With the fourth ribbon “circle”, sew it diagonally. (This creates an “x” shape with the other diagonal ribbon shape.)

— 7 —
Attach the button and then attach the ribbon to the bar pin. (Follow direction steps 8-9 of Button Long Ribbon Pin). Button Flower Ribbon Pin complete.

Note: Consider using different colors for each ribbon strand.

Note two: If you have a plain button, consider painting it to add a pop of color.
