I stumbled upon a book about chainmail jewelry while at the library, and immediately thought of the British having chainmail (like in Monty Python and the Holy Grail). In leafing through the book, there were many patterns to choose from (and varying in difficulty), but it looked like something I could do and decided to try it.

After I checked out the book, I went to a craft store and got supplies. I chose a simple pattern that looked doable: a basic European chainmail. It was repetitive, which made it pretty easy to do, but sometimes it hurt my head because I had to be sure I was connecting the rings correctly; the rings all had to face the right direction otherwise the pattern would look strange.

While in the midst of creating my bracelet, I couldn’t help but marvel that people had used this process to create armor. (And I thought opening and closing the jump rings for my bracelet seemed like an endless job.) Even though chainmail can be tedious, what I appreciate about it is that it’s such a simple idea, and yet the possibilities it creates are limitless.
