DIY: Spiral Wire Necklace

Looking at a spiral notebook one morning, I thought the spiral metal rings created interesting shapes that I could create jewelry with.

SUPPLIES

• Used spiral notebook
• Cord/ribbon/chain
• Clasp
• Jump Rings
• Pliers

Rip out the pages and cover from the spiral notebook (be particularly careful towards the end of tearing out pages because you could misshape the rings if you pull the pages too hard). All that should be left are the spiral metal rings.

Tip: Choose a used spiral notebook that has a fairly thin cover (e.g. made of thin card stock) so it's easy to tear off. A thick chipboard or plastic cover will likely not come off.

String the spiral metal rings onto a cord/ribbon/chain and add a clasp.

I used the Wire Rope Necklace from an earlier post to string the spiral metal rings onto.

Spiral notebooks come in different sizes, so there are a variety of spiral ring sizes that you could use for jewelry. The one I used was 0.5 inch in diameter, but other common sizes are likely to be 0.25 inch, 0.375 inch, 0.75 inch and 1 inch.

If you want to shorten the spiral rings, try using wire cutters to cut them to your desired length. If you do this, then you’ll probably want to finish the end in some way (e.g. gluing an end bead or cover the end with a bit of duck tape) so you don’t poke yourself with the sharp end.
