Moss Stitch Scarf and Fingerless Gloves

I decided to use some white yarn (that had been sitting in a drawer for quite some time) to knit a scarf. I didn’t really need another scarf, but I felt like doing some mindless knitting and it’s one of the simplest things to make.

So I decided on a moss stitch for the scarf because I like the texture it creates and kept the first and last three stitches of each row knit stitches to create an edge. 

— SCARF —

Cast on 35 stitches.

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: K3, *K1, P1; repeat from *, end K3

Row 3: Knit

Row 4: K3, *P1, K1; repeat from *, end K3

Repeat these rows until you have the length you like and then bind off. (My grand total was 401 rows.)

I finished the scarf by adding a decorative knotted fringe. 

With that same yarn and needles I decided to make simple fingerless gloves (that are essentially rectangles with seams on the side with an opening for the thumbs).

— FINGERLESS GLOVES —

Cast on 35 stitches.

Row 1: K3, *P2, K2; repeat from * to end

Row 2: P2, *K2, P2; repeat from *, end K1

Repeat these two rows until you have the height you like (for me it was a total of 14 rows).

Row 15-17: Knit

Row 18: Knit

Row 19: *K1, P1; repeat from * to end

Row 20: Knit

Row 21: *P1, K1; repeat from * to end

Repeat these four rows until you have the height you like (for me it was a total of 24 rows).

Row 42-44: Knit

Bind off.

Then I matched the vertical side edges and sewed the seam. (For me, it was about 3½ inch seam from the bottom, then a 1½  inch opening and then a 1 inch seam). 

For the scarf and fingerless gloves I used about three skeins of medium weight (4) cotton yarn with US 7 straight needles.
