Every so often I’d catch a stray episode of The X-Files on some random TV channel and was reminded of how much I liked the series. Many years had passed since I’d really watched it and I decided it was time to watch it again from the beginning (as I’d forgotten pretty much everything about it). The show still makes me smile; I find the weird and creepy stories quite entertaining, and enjoy the government conspiracies with its many shadowy figures. And of course, I like Mulder and Scully (as individuals as well as working as a team)…they amuse me.
As I was rewatching The
X-Files, I was reminded of a friend who was really into it while it was on TV; she had the “I want to believe”
poster and everything. So I thought it would be fun to create my own version of
the “I want to believe” poster for her. I kept the general layout the same with
the UFO in the sky above some trees, but I took a few liberties (like changing
the trees to evergreens). I kept things pretty simple, using flat drawings and
adding a bit of texture.
Then I thought it would be fun to make a La Femme Nikita poster since my friend really liked that show as well. I enjoy the darkness, deception and manipulation pervasive throughout the show; everything just seems so dire, where pretty much whatever Nikita does she’s on the brink of cancellation. When I think of La Femme Nikita, I think of sexy clothing, guns, explosions and blood. So I thought it a stiletto heel in a pool of blood fit perfectly with the show.
I then thought of another friend who was into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so I thought
I’d make something for her as well. I went for a simple stake through the heart
imagery with a bit of blood dripping down. I wanted it to be pink and girly to
offset the darker killing aspect of the show. She also liked Angel, so I decided to create a simple
angel wing to represent the show.
Once I was finished with the different TV show layouts, I
decided to make them into notebooks that my friends could use. I enjoy all of
these shows, yet oddly, each friend was never particularly interested in the
other’s shows, which is too bad because I think they’re both missing out on
some entertaining TV shows.
