DIY: String Tag

I wanted to make something that used string as a focal point. I think in the back of my mind were those cardboard thread holders that you might find in a travel sewing kit, where the thread is held in place by an indented part of the cardboard.

I had embroidery floss that had been sitting in a drawer for years, so I decided to use it in this string tag.

SUPPLIES

• Colored string (I used two different colors together)
• Scissors
• Chipboard/Cardboard (I used the backing chipboard from a used tracing paper pad)
• Ruler
• Pencil
• X-acto knife (along with self-healing cutting mat)
• Stamp and stamp pad 

DIRECTIONS

Measure and mark the size you want the tag to be on the chipboard (mine was 3.75 inch by 2 inch) and cut out with the X-acto knife.

Decide where you want the notches for the string to be placed and mark with a pencil. (I created my notches 0.5 inch from the bottom of the tag and then created three more notches at 0.375 inch increments. Additionally, I put three notches at the bottom of the tag, 0.5 inch apart.)

Using scissors cut out small triangular shapes at notch markings. (Note: make sure that the notches are deep enough to keep the string in place. My notches are between 0.125 inch and 0.25 inch deep).

Punch hole at top of tag.

Stamp desired stamp right onto the chipboard.

Place string at notched points in any way you find pleasing, keeping the string taut. (I didn’t cut the string to its approximate length until I played with the string placement and could estimate how much string was necessary.)

Once the ends of the string are through the punched hole, knot securely. Then knot the two string ends together (at about an inch longer than the length of the tag) and cut any excess string. Tag complete.

Alternatively, you can use a stamped paper tag instead of stamping onto the chipboard itself.
